46-48A survey on the occurrence of luminous bacteria was carried out in the Vellar Estuary, Tamil Nadu, India for over 4 months and 105 strains of bacteria were isolated and identified using diagnostic tests. Ninetyeight strains were identified as Beneckea harveyi, 2 as Photobacterium fischeri and 5 as P. leiognathi, B. harveyi was isolated from all samples while P. fischeri and P. leiognathi showed restricted distribution
