247-248Wave characteristics of 3 regions, viz. (1) lat. 12ᵒ-16ᵒ N long. 84ᵒ-88ᵒ E; (2) lat. 12ᵒ-16ᵒ N, long. 88ᵒ-92ᵒ E; and (3) lat. 16ᵒ-20ᵒ N, long. 88ᵒ-92ᵒ E, have been studied. Predominant direction of waves in all these regions is between S and SW during March to September and N and NE during November to February. Frequency distribution of waves from different directions during an year is similar to that in the neighbourhood which is related to the wind field over the Bay of Bengal in the respective regions. Large percentage of waves in a year possess moderate heights (0 to 1.75 m) and periods (0 to 7 sec) and only about 4% of waves possess large heights ( > 3.75 m)
