OBJECTIVES and BACKGROUND: Transfusion thresholds for upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) are controversial. Observational studies suggest associations between liberal red blood cell (RBC) transfusion and adverse outcome. A recent trial reported increased mortality following liberal transfusion.
