Effect of Float Length and Sett on Fabric Characteristics

Four 8-end twill weave structures (1/7, 2/6, 3/5, 4/4) with picks per inch of 52, 62 and 72 and warp sets of 52s, 56s and 62s were woven. Using 22s cotton warp and weft, the fabric was tested for fabric assistance, fabric strip strength, single yarn strength, crimp and elongation. The results indicate that with increase in float length, the warp strength decreases and localization of rupture and binding effect decrease, thereby reducing the strength. There is practically no effect of float length on weft strength. The warp strength of the fabric increases with increase in picks per inch. The dependence of elongation on maximum float length and number of picks per inch is discussed.
