Modified processing of jute fabrics to minimize photoyellowing: Part II-Use of uv absorbers

30-33<span style="font-size:11.0pt;line-height:115%; font-family:" calibri","sans-serif";mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin;mso-fareast-font-family:="" "times="" new="" roman";mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-fareast;mso-hansi-theme-font:="" minor-latin;mso-bidi-font-family:calibri;mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-latin;="" mso-ansi-language:en-us;mso-fareast-language:en-us;mso-bidi-language:ar-sa"="">Jute fabric, bleached under optimum conditions, was treated with a water-soluble uv absorber HMBS (Hoechst) as well as with a water-insoluble uv absorber Tinuvin 320 (Ciba-Geigy). The uv absorbers (uvas) were applied by the pad-dry technique at various concentrations (% owf) and the optimum concentration, which showed the minimum photoyellowing after exposure to light, was determined. It has been observed that the use of HMBS and Tinuvin minimize the extent of photodegradation and photoyellowing of jute when applied at 0.3 and 0.4% owf concentration respectively. HMBS has poor wash fastness while Tinuvin has moderate wash fastness which could not be improved by various finishing treatments. The mechanism of the action of both the uvas is discussed briefly and the probable application areas are suggested.
