794-797Using variational approach with elliptic Gaussian laser beam as trial function, the combined effect of nonlinearity and diffraction on wave propagation of optical beam in a graded Kerr- medium has been investigated. Beam dynamics showing the propagation characteristics with emphasis on variation of beam widths and longitudinal phase delay has been presented. Although no stationary self-trapping has been observed, oscillatory self-trapping occurs far below the threshold. The regularised phase is always negative.
