133-140A geographical indication (GI) is a certification that generates competitive advantage and adds value to the product and region in which it originates. Brazil, as a major exporter of agricultural products, presents significant potential for this type of protection taking into account cultural diversity, ecosystems and typical gastronomy. However, the GIs are little known and exploited in the country. This paper aims to present an overview of the geographical indications in Brazil, including aspects of legislation, actions being implemented, and the potential of the country to protect GIs
