The paper presents a review of hydrophobic coatings and admixtures with particular emphasis on silanes and siloxanes. The adsorption mechanism, the level of hydrophobic activity and qualification and evaluation of hydrophobic surface coatings are discussed. The use of hydrophobic agent as a concrete admixture is also examined. The early experimental results in the use of hydrophobic agents reveal that the use of the material is beneficial in corrosion prevention and mitigation of alkali-aggregate reactivity
