Conversational Overlap and Interruption in The Second Presidential Debate:Hillary Clinton VS Donald Trump

This research aims to analyze the conversational overlap and interruptionthat contains in the conversation of the second presidential debate betweenHillary Clinton and Donald Trump in Washington University, St. Louis. Theobjectives of the research are: (1) to identify the kinds of overlap and interruptionin the conversation of the second presidential debate between Hillary Clinton andDonald Trump (2) to analyze how the conversation of the second presidentialdebate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trumpshow the reason to do overlapand interruption. To get the answer to the research problem, this study uses atheory of overlap proposed by Emanuel Schegloff and theory of interruptionproposed by Murata.This research uses a qualitative method. The result of thisresearch shows that in the debate there are24datacategorized as overlap and 38data categorized as an interruption, so interruption occurred more than overlap.And from 62 data, breaking up is the common reason for overlap and interruption.x, 55 hlm,; ilus 25 c
