Department of Linguistics, 2017.Men and women are empirically demonstrated to have different rates of success in British Parliamentary Debate, begging a simple question: why? This honors thesis contributes to the discussion through a comparative analysis of the hedges “I think” and “we think” across different gender presentations in debate speeches. In contrast to popular belief about gendered language, the difference between the two groups’ speech patterns did not manifest in use of different structures.
