A study of the orchestration technic of Sibelius

Typewritten. --- Thesis (M.M.)--University of Rochester, 1948.In this study of the orchestration technic of Sibelius two tone poems and a symphony have been chosen. These works, En Saga, the Second Symphony, and Pohjols's Daughter, over a period of fourteen years with the dates of completion being 1892, 1901, and 1906 respectively. In any study of Sibelius the Second Symphony is a logical choice by virtue of its popularity with both musicians and listeners. The choice of the two tone poems was arbitrary. Few of Sibelius' tone poems can be said to be standard repertoire, but he has written so much in this form that no study of his orchestration teohnic would be complete that excluded this form. Sibelius' acknowledged mastery as one of the greatest living composers is unchallenged. Added to this is his ability to orchestrate his music in such a fashion as to make it most effective. This thesis will be written in an attempt to find out what methods are used to attain this effectiveness. The use of the individual instruments will be studied in each score and any departure from normal usage will be noted. Solo passages will be criticised from the performer's viewpoint. The different sections Will be studied for doubling and balance. The final chapter will cover any material not previously discussed and will also contain a summary
