McAnarney, M.D., Dr. Lawrence discusses her upbringing in Westchester Co., N.Y.; her attendance at Antioch College in the early 1940s; a summer job at Ciba that influenced her decision to study medicine; her years at the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry; her internship at Yale and the influence of Grover Powers and Milton Senn; her marriage to Robert Lawrence, M.D. at the outbreak of the Korean War; her residency in Rochester and growing interest in issues related to newborn nutrition and toxicology; and her direction of the nursery at Strong Memorial Hospital during her residency. Dr. Lawrence reflects on changes in the care of newborns, clinical toxicology, and lactation, a subject on which she authored the authoritative textbook.
