Thesis (B.S.)--University of Rochester. Dept. of Physics and Astronomy, 1993.Neilsen-Olesen strings can arise in an Abelian Higgs theory with one matter field, whether arising from particle theory or cosmology. Their existence depends on a quantized net magnetic flux through a region of space. When this occurs the matter field is forced away from its vacuum expectation value (VEV) at the center of the region containing the flux. These solutions have cylindrical spatial symmetry, and finite energy density per unit length along the z axis. Similar solutions may exist when more than one matter field is involved
