About 60% of the total world crude steel production capacity is covered by oxygen blowing processes, with the top and bottom blown technologies accounting for greatest part. These processes are being applied to steel grades of all kinds, including low alloy steels. As a general stat-ement it can be said that steel qualities produced in top blown oxygen converters also be produced by the bottom blown practice. It has been demonstrated in various appli-cations that the Q-BOP process is particularly favourable one for steels having a low carbon content and for the refining of high- phosphorus pig iron, whereas the top blown LD technology offers high economy in the production of steels with a higher carbon content
