The whole process of producing finished steel from primary raw materials is a sequence of steps, some of which are batch operations, whilst others are continuous. Many of the batch operations are nowadays becoming so quick that the sequence of events has come to resemble a relay race in athletics, the progress of the baton being analogous with that of the steel in its successive stages of manufacture.
