Indian blast furnaces are charactersied by low produc-tivity and high coke rate as compared to those abroad. In this period of increasing demand for the production of pig iron, use of suitable sized ore, higher percent- age of sinters in the burden etc can improve the produc-tivity to a greater extent. However, in order to incr- ease the productivity, characterisation of iron bearing materials in respect of different physico-chemical properties i s necessary as this can help in having in prior knowledge about the iron bearing materials before being used in the blast furnace.
