Remelting of steels by the electro-slag process -- The electro-slag process was developed as a means of econo-mically welding together large sections, so extending the range of finished sizes. The process is started by striking an arc under a layer of powder flux. When sufficient flux has been melted the arc discharge ceases, and the transfer of current from the tip of the electrode to the surface of the deposited metal takes place entirely through the ionised liquid slag. This resistive heating of the slag provides the high temperature necessary for the melting of the electrode, which is fed continuously into the molten bath. The slag is electrically conductive and is not overloaded with arc stabilisers
