A mathematical modelling methodology is presented to simulate the electromagnetic stirring and macrosegregation phenomena during solidification of continuously cast high carbon steel for developing a theoretical framework to optimise the process in terms of the process parameters such as, the stirring force, stilTing pattern and location ofthe stirrer along the solidification pool in the final solidification zone. The stirring thrust has been determined from the solution of the transport equation of magnetic field derived from the MHD approximation of Maxwell's electromagnetic field equations.
