Many detrimental impurities and inclusions are entrapped in the metal during melting. Their origin is related to erosion of refractory lining, formation of oxides, flux inclusions, furnace atmosphere, etc. In the present review, an attempt is made to assess the influence of these factors on the quality of the metal. It is shown that some of the impurities and suspended oxides can be eliminated by suitable fluxing and skimming. (Shri C.S. Sivaramakrishnan and Shri K.M.
