The purpose is to describe some physicochemical characteristics of iron burden for some Indian iron and steel plants. The behaviour of Indian iron ores and agglomerates as iron burden can be evaluated from the results, and the information used to improve productivity. Conditions for tumbler, shatter, thermal degradation, low temperature break down, reduction degradation, reducibility, softening, and swelling tests are described. The results obtained from tests on some Indian iron ores and agglomerates are reported. The characterization of iron bearing material with respect to physicochemical properties will be used for regulating blast furnace operating condition
