The sellers, the buyers and the demand : A discourse analysis of the medial portrayal of the Swedish law that prohibits the purchase of sexual services 20 years after its introduction.

The aim with this study is to analyze how the law that prohibits the purchase of sexual services is portrayed discursive in Swedish morning and evening tabloids. Through an analysis of 42 articles from several papers during 2019, that concern the law that prohibits the purchase of sexual services, following questions will be discussed: How is the law that prohibits the purchase of sexual services portrayed?, How are the people that sell sexual services portrayed?, How are the people that buy sexual services portrayed? and How is the relation between supply and demand concerning prostitution portrayed?.A Foucauldian discourse analysis has been used to answer the questions. Discourses have been distinguished by analyzing the implicit, rules of exclusion and subject positioning in the articles. The four predominant discourses that have been found are: The law as an incomplete tool, The seller as a female victim, The buyer as a male perpetrator, andThe supply presupposes the demand. This study takes its starting point in a social constructivist perspective, and treats two feministic perspectives on prostitution, liberal feminism and radical feminism. The discourses shows on a consistently radical feminist view on prostitution throughout the articles that concern the law that prohibits the purchase of sexual services. Syftet med denna studie är att analysera hur sexköpslagen framställs diskursivt i svensk dags- och kvällspress. Genom analys av 42 artiklar från flera tidningar under 2019, som berör ämnet sexköpslagen behandlas följande frågor: Hur framställs sexköpslagen?, Hur framställs människor som säljer sex?, Hur framställs människor som köper sex? samt Hur framställs relationen mellan utbud och efterfrågan rörande prostitution?. Frågorna besvaras genom en foucauldiansk diskursanalys, där diskurser urskilts genom analys av vad som underförstås, vad som görs illegitimt samt subjektspositioneringar i artiklarna. De fyra diskurser som återfunnits i artiklarna är: Lagen som ofullständigt verktyg, Säljaren som kvinnligt offer, Köparen som manlig förövare, samtEfterfrågan förutsätter utbudet. Uppsatsen tar avstamp i ett socialkonstruktivistiskt perspektiv, och behandlar två feministiska inriktningar, liberalfeminism och radikalfeminism. Resultatet visar på en genomgående radikalfeministisk ton, där män som säljer sex osynliggörs i artiklarna som berör sexköpslagen.
