The Relationship Between Teacher Question and Students' Responses in the English Classroom at SMPN 5 Malang

The use of teacher’s question in class by the teacherengaged students’ interest in subject materials. This study tried to describe therelationship between teacher’s question and students’ responses at English classroom.The researcher used descriptive-qualitative design and observed the natural setting inclassroom when the teacher taught in three meetings. The result indicated that the teacherasked display and referential questions. Even though the number of display questions wasmore than referential, referential questions got longer and varied responses from thestudents. Meanwhile, students’ responses to display question were mainly short and oneright answer. Display questions used as a warm up question before moving on the higherlevel question. Referential question was appropriate in second language classroom sinceone of the target in 2013 Curriculum; the students are expected to be able to thinkcritically. In addition, referential questions engaged students’ ability to produce moreoutput. Keywords: teacher’s question, students’ response, English classroom
