Addressing terms in English Translation of Negeri 5 Menara

Keywords: addressing terms, translation, negeri 5 menara As one of Indonesian novels, Negeri 5 Menara has got special attention by having been translated into English. Analyzing the English version of the novel is quite intriguing as this novel portrays the life of six boys coming from different regions in Indonesia and they have different cultures. One interesting aspect is the translation of addressing terms used by those six characters. Indonesian addressing terms are usually translated into English in very simple terms. It was quite difficult to translate the addressing terms in relation to different languages from different countries which have completely different cultures and rules about the addressing terms. Thus, a good strategy in translating addressing terms is needed to provide better understanding between people with different cultures and languages. The research design of this study is descriptive qualitative. The process of analyzing the data was started from collecting the data followed by classifying, analyzing, discussing the findings, and then drawing the conclusion. In doing this research, the writer analyzed the kinds of addressing terms and the translation procedures used by the translator of the novel. Negeri 5 Menara and the English version The Land of Five Towers was chosen as the object of the study since it contains various addressing terms whose equivalence in the target language is difficult to find. The present study includes the six translation procedures found in direct conversation from the six main characters containing the addressing terms. The six translation procedures found in the novel are Literal Translation, Transliteration, Componential Analysis, Transference, Adaptation, and Cultural Equivalent. From the analysis, it is found that some addressing terms which are translated into English are not equivalent with their original version. Since some addressing terms of Indonesian local languages have not been commonly translated into English, the translator used the nearest target language equivalent. Using the nearest target language equivalent also helps the readers to understand the context, however in some cases it is better for a translator to use borrowing procedure in the attempt to keep the original addressing terms from the source language. As a result, the translator will keep the cultural sense of the story. The results of the study demonstrate that the translation procedure used by the translator is Literal Translation, Transference, Adaptation, Transliteration, Cultural Equivalent and Componential Analysis. Thus, based on the result of the research it can be concluded that the application of the translation procedures is adjusted into the reader’s need based on their cultural background or the target language equivalent. The researcher also gives some suggestions, for linguistics students may use this research to gain some information about addressing terms and translating procedures. For future researchers, this research might be used as a reference for the future researcher who interested to conduct research about addressing terms in different field of research. The last is for writers, the researcher expected that they may write many novels which contain various terms from local languages in Indonesia
