UTILIZING SCIENTIFIC APPROACH THROUGH THE PRESENTATION, PRACTICE, AND PRODUCTION (PPP) STRATEGYTO ENHANCE WRITING SKILLS OF RECOUNT TEXTS OF THE EIGHT GRADERS OF SMP NEGERI 1 CERME GRESIK

Key Words: Scientific Approach, Presentation-Practice-Production (PPP), writing skills, recount texts, eight grade students English as the international language drives people to have proficiencies in language skills, especially in the productive skills. As communication, writing skill is important to be included as an integral part of teaching and learning activities. In Indonesia, English has been taught since in the kindergarten, but in fact, Indonesian still have a lot of difficulties in learning English. Based on the preliminary study that was conducted in SMP Negeri 1 Cerme, it was found out that the students had difficulties in the arrangement and building sentences in recount texts. This study is aimed to describe the teaching strategy that can enhance writing skills of recount texts of the eight graders. This study was conducted in collaborative classroom action research (CAR). The study was done in 2 cycles which contained of planning the action, implementing, observing the action, and reflecting. Analytic scoring is used in analyzing the students’ final score in the form of recount essay. The instruments that were used as the data collection are observation checklists, questionnaire, and students’ final essay. The result of the study showed that the implementation of Scientific Approach through the Presentation, Practice and Production (PPP) strategy in teaching and learning activities can improve the students’ writing abilityof recount texts. The improvement can be seen from the criteria of success which is the students’ score is above 78.The success was met in the Cycle 2. More than 50% of the students’ score was above 78 and the activities checklist showed that the class active involvement was higher than 75%. Based on the result, it can be concluded that the implementation of Scientific Approach through Presentation, Practice and Production (PPP) strategy improves the writing skills of recount texts. The stages of the strategy can improve the students’ active involvement in the teaching and learning activities. Regarding the success of the study, it was suggested to the English teachers in the SMP level (and/or other language teachers) to utilize the approach in order to improve the quality teaching and learning process. For the future researchers who want to carry the similar action research, it is considered that they can improve the innovation and answer the weaknesses that might be found within the study
