USING SCAFFOLDING STRATGEY TO INCREASE THE WRITING ABILITY OF THE STUDENTS OF SMPN 20 MALANG

Furaidah M.A. Key Words: writing, scaffolding strategy, writing ability, students’ involvement,students’ attitude The students of VIII E of SMPN 20 Malang had problems in writing. Theirproblem included generating the idea and organization, vocabulary used,understanding the grammar, and mechanic. The researcher conducted a study to solvethe problems by using scaffolding strategy. In this study, classroom action research design was used. It consists of foursteps: planning, implementing, observing and reflecting. The subjects of the studywere class VIII E of SMPN 20 Malang in the second semester of academic year of2013/2014. There were 36 of students in this class. The researcher used someresearch instruments: questionnaire, observation checklist, field notes. The media thatthe researcher used were power point, jumbled sentences, and worksheet and thematerials was model text, guiding questions, and scoring rubric. This study followedthe principle of gradual release in scaffolding strategy. The researcher removed somescaffolds when the students’ had been ready to write more independently. The researcher used three criteria of success. First, seventy five percent of thestudents (75%) pass the passing grade. Second, seventy five percent of the students(75%) involve during teaching learning process. Third, seventy five percent of thestudents (75%) like the implementation of this strategy. The research findings show that scaffolding strategy generally improvedstudents’ writing ability. The improvement can be seen from the students’ scores,which was increased. The scaffolding strategy also motivated students in writingsince the steps are easy. The result of this study shows that the students have fulfilledall of the criteria of success that the researcher prepared. Based on the findings of the research, the researcher suggests the Englishteacher to adopt the steps in the implementation of the scaffolding strategy. Since thisstrategy is also effective in involving and motivating students to write, the researchersuggests the English teacher to use this strategy for unmotivated students. Furtherresearchers are suggested to investigate how scaffolding strategy improves thestudents’ writing ability in different text types. They are also recommended toconduct other studies on the use of scaffolding strategy in teaching other skills andlanguage components
