IMPROVING THE SPEAKING SKILL OF THE NINTH GRADE STUDENTS OF MTS NU PAKIS USING SONGS

Advisor II: Nurenzia Yannuar, M.A. Keywords: Speaking skill, English songs, collaborative action research The study was designed to improve the speaking skills of ninth A graders at MTS NU PAKIS through the implementation of English songs in the teaching and learning process. It is a technique selected because it was able to encourage the students to improve their speaking abilities in English class activities. Therefore, the research problem is “How can the speaking skills of the ninth graders of MTS NU PAKIS increased through the use of English songs?” This study employed collaborative research design in which the researcher and the collaborative teacher worked collaboratively in designing the lesson plans, implementing the action, and making reflection. The subjects of the study were 24 ninth A graders of MTS NU PAKIS of 2012-2013 academic years. This study was conducted in two cycles by following the procedure of the action research namely planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. There were three meetings in each cycle. The data of the study were obtained from the result of the observation, the score in the preliminary study, and the field notes which were taken during the implementation of the action. The procedures of implementing English songs technique in the teaching and learning process in Cycle I were 1) listening to the song, 2) repetition song, 3) writing in group, 4) reading in the seat. While in Cycle II, the procedures of implementing English songs technique in the teaching and learning process were 1) listening to the song, 2) repetition song, 3) writing in group, 4) reading in front of the class. The finding of this study was that the students were speaking in front of the class. It can be seen in the scoring rubric on the students’ scores in the class. In Cycle I, there were 68.61% students who were active in the classroom. While in Cycle II, there were 82.78% students who were active in the classroom. Both the students and the teacher were active in the teaching and learning process during the implementation of English songs. The students were highly motivated in learning English in the class and enjoyed singing English songs.
