FOSTERING STUDENTS’ SPEAKING SKILL IN STORYTELLING BY USING PICTURE SERIES

Advisor: Siti Muniroh, S.Pd, M.A. Keywords: speaking skill, picture series, storytelling, senior high school It was found that the achievement of the students’ speaking skill of XI Science Program 1 at SMA negeri 4 Malang had not been satisfactory yet. Based on the preliminary study, there were only 10 students out of 30 students passed the minimum standard of learning mastery (KKM). The lack of motivation and confidence to speak up in class were the main problems in the teaching and learning process. Besides, the teacher rarely used media to teach in the class to attract their students. This study was intended to improve the students’ speaking skill in storytelling by using picture series as the instructional media. The study was a classroom action research, conducted in two cycles, each of which consists of four steps; planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. The subjects of the study were 30 students of XI science program 1 of SMA Negeri 4 Malang. The instruments used to collect the data were the observation checklists, field notes, interview guide, scoring rubric, and questionnaires. There were two types of criteria of success. The first was the process oriented criterion that required 75% of the students (23 students out of 30 students) should be actively involved in the teaching and learning process. Meanwhile, the product oriented criterion was at least 85% of the students (26 students out of 30 students) should reach 76 as the minimum standard of learning mastery. In implementing, the picture series, several activities were made, the activities were: group discussion, practice, and presentation. According to the findings, it was found that there was in improvement both on the students’ active participation and students’ score. The result of cycle 2 showed that 83% of students (25 students out of 30 students) were actively involved in the teaching and learning activity, it improved 23% from the result of cycle 1. Meanwhile, there were 90% of the students (27 students out of 30) students passed the minimum standard of learning mastery; it improved 50% from the result of cycle 1. Picture series gives satisfactory results’ on the improvement of the students speaking skill in storytelling. Based on the research findings, two suggestions are provided for the English teachers and future researchers. For English teachers, the researcher believed that this research will be beneficial for English teacher since picture series are interesting media to teach speaking. Moreover, the English teachers may make use of media such as LCD Projector provided in the classroom to display the pictures. For the future researcher who has the same idea in improving the students’ speaking skill by using picture series are expected to provide many different picture series in the activity, so each group can tell different story. Moreover, it can be applied for other monologue texts such as recount text and report text.
