English Code Mixing in the Entertainment Column of Jawa Pos

The research problems in this study are: what types of code mixing can be found in entertainment column of Jawa Pos and what form of code mixing which occurs in entertainment column of Jawa Pos. Types of code mixing according to Musyken (2000) which includes insertion, congruent lexicalization and alternation. Then, form of code mixing according to Hamers and Blanc (1987:266) code mixing can occurs in verb, noun, adjective, adverb, phrase, clause, and sentence. The study employs a qualitative-descriptive approach. The data of this study are language which is containing English code mixing in entertainment column of Jawa Pos. In collecting the data, the researcher read the article in the entertainment column of Jawa Pos which contain of code mixing. The languages then were classified based on types of code mixing according to Musyken (2000) which includes insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization. Then, the sentences or words were classified based on the form of code mixing related to Hamers and Blanc's (1987:266) idea that code mixing can occurs in verb, noun, adjective, adverb, phrase, clause and sentence. The results show that from the most frequent types of code mixing found in the entertainment column of Jawa Pos is insertion that occurs 40 times (66.7%). Then, the second rank is congruent lexicalization that occurs 11 times (18.3%) and the last rank is alternation that occurs 9 times (15%). The results also show that most frequent form of code mixing found in the entertainment column of Jawa Pos is noun phrase that occurs 26 times (37%). Then, in the second rank is noun that occurs 20 times (28.5%). Third rank is adjective that occurs 8 times (11.7%). Fourth rank is verb that occurs 6 times (8.5%). Fifth rank is sentence that occurs 5 times (7.1%). Sixth rank is adverb phrase that occurs 3 times (4.3%). The last rank is adjective phrase that occurs 2 times (2.9%). Form the result above, we can draw a conclusion that code mixing is often used by journalists in their communication. This phenomenon will increase the use of English terminologies in entertainment world caused by the artists and the journalists who mix their language in their articles. Finally, it is suggested the sociolinguistics students can critically analyze other types of code mixing from other theories and different object of the study. It is also suggested that the result of this study can be used as reference for the future researchers in exploring and analyzing of code mixing on another theme.
