Reference and Inference Roles of Humor in Shrek the Third Movie Script.

This study aims at understanding and finding out reference and inference strategies applied in Shrek the Third movie script. There are two problems in this study, which are to find out the strategies of reference and inference of humor in Shrek the Third. This study is expected to give some useful contributions to the study of Linguistics, particularly to the study of Pragmatics application in utterances and to 3-D artists and movie practitioners. The findings of this study are expected to give some beneficial insight to Indonesian learners of English Linguistics to get a better understanding of reference and inference processes of humor. The application of humor in an animation movie is also beneficial to improve the quality of Indonesian animation movie. The research design of this study is qualitative and the data of this study are utterances by characters in Shrek the Third movie script. Theories that are used in analyzing the data are theory of reference and inference and theory of speech acts. The findings of this study are the strategies of reference and inference applied in Shrek the Third movie script. The references strategies are referential and attributive use of reference, names as referents, co-text and context roles, and the three dimensions of locution acts with the discussion of semantic as strategies of reference. Each of them has the interconnections due to the general genre of this animation movie, which is parody. On the other hand, the inference strategies are the elaboration of the three dimensions of locutions acts that are locution, illocution, and perlocution with semantic examination. The strategies of this study are applicable by several specification of humor deliverance style in Shrek the Third. They are the infringement of traditional story of fairytales, connections between modern terms with the scene essence exposures, non-sequiturs statements, spoken parody to enrich the motion picture with stronger parody, language play in smart mixes between meaning and circumstances, words-playing humor and emotional-parody. Based on the findings of the study, several suggestions are made by the researcher. The first is that more study should be conducted on the same object since this study has not explored all linguistic features on reference and inference processes. The second is that more analysis should be done on animation film since it has so many interesting linguistic elements inside. The third is for the students who study Pragmatics, especially speech acts and reference-inference. The researcher suggests using the movie script in studying reference and inference roles and speech acts.
