This thesis is a pragmatic study about the compliment responses used by English Department Students of State University of Malang in responding the compliments from three people with three different social distances. The social distance here includes an intimate person, an acquaintance, and a stranger. The compliment responses were collected using a Discourse Completion Test (DCT) taken from Al Falasi (2007). Three scenarios were described in which the participants were expected to give respond to the compliment from the speaker on different occasions.
