The Effects of Setting of Place on Main Character’s Early Development on Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

Nowadays there are many novels that have been published in Indonesia. One of the novels is Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone that is written by J.K. Rowling. This novel is so popular not only in Indonesia but also in the world. This novel has been sold more than six million copies and has been translated more than six languages. Apart from that, I want to have deeper analysis about this novel. The problems in this study are: (1) What elements of the novel do relate with main character’s early development and, (2) What effects does setting of place do on main character’s early development? This is qualitative descriptive study. The data of this thesis was collected by reading the novel thoroughly and comprehensively. Then, the elements of novel Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone were written down on individual notes. This novel is analyzed with the structural approach. The structural approach is an approach that finds the relationship among the various components of systems. From components of system and the relations among that system, the structural approach can understand the beauty of literary works. Based on the problems of the study, the result of this study are: the elements of Harry Potter and Sorcerer’s Stone that relate with the main character’s early development are setting, character and characterization. The effects of setting of place does on the main character’s early development is Harry Potter becomes unsure about his wizard abilities that he had since he was a baby. Wizard world awakes his abilities totally and makes him dare to face Lord Voldemort. Based on the result above I suggest the next research to analyze the next series of Harry Potter for example Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret. The next research can analyze the character and characterization of Harry Potter by compares it in the first novel with the second novel
