Going green: eco-friendly food packaging used by Malaysian food truck entrepreneurs at the 29th SEA Games

In Malaysia, food trucks seems to be the new popular dining trend for many in urban locations. This growth in the food truck business has led to increased usage of food and beverage packaging which also directly affects the environment. The packaging industry, in tandem, should focus on producing more biodegradable packaging materials to encourage eco-friendly practices in the food truck industry. This paper explores the motivation of food truck entrepreneurs on biodegradable food packaging and eco-friendly practices in their business. Using a qualitative research approach, data was collected from 30 semi-structured interviews with food truck entrepreneurs. The findings reveal four emerging themes: pride, supply, usability and government regulatory as sources of motivation. Respondents felt that changing their food packaging is a social desirability and can help raise awareness amongst other food service providers.
