Language learning strategies are conscious efforts by the learner in exhibiting specific behaviour, which will facilitate a learning process that is self-directed. Strategy choice and frequency of use are influenced by factors such as learner characteristics and situational demands. Since a large percentage of Malaysian classrooms are co-educational, gender too becomes an important variable, which could influence strategy use in the ESL classroom.
