Technical assessment on the potential of biodiesel as a renewable energy from Langkawi waste cooking oil

A study has been done to assess the technical potential of Malaysian waste cooking oil (WCO) as alternative feedstock for biodiesel production in the island of Langkawi Malaysia. Biodiesel is a domestic, renewable fuel for diesel engines derived from vegetables oil, which meets the specifications of ASTM D 6751. The use of WCO as a resource for biodiesel production not only appreciating the function of fresh cooking oil in the food chain, but it will also contribute to a better management of the waste oil from polluting the environment. This paper presented the results of a comprehensive sensitivity and technical studies to assess the feasibility of WCO from Langkawi Island to be used as the raw material for biodiesel production. The study has shown that it is plausible to collect between 100,000 to 400,000 kg of WCO annually. The quality of WCO indicates that 80-85% could be converted into biodiesel that is sufficient to complement 17.8% of power generation diesel demand in Langkawi. The results of this study will be the blueprint for implementation of WCO management and production of biodiesel as an alternative fuel for diesel in Langkawi Island
