This paper compares bilingual education policy and practices in the United States and Malaysia. Issues examined include the social context of bilingual education in the two countries, challenges faced by teachers, their classroom practices and support provided. A key assumption was that such a comparison could provide us with a better understanding of conditions and factors that might make for more effective bilingual education practice in Malaysia. Malaysia can learn a great deal by studying the US bilingual experience and use the information to implement practices that can support the development of teaching Mathematics and Science in English
