Between the ideal and reality: teachers\u27 perception of the implementation of school-based oral English assessment

The purpose of this study was to determine the factors related to the implementation of School-based oral English assessment in rural secondary schools in Sandakan Division, Sabah. First of all, the study aimed to find out the extent of implementation of school-based oral English assessment by the English Language teachers based on selected demographic factors. Secondly, it was aimed at finding out whether the English Language teachers are familiar with the content, function and the process of implementation of School-based oral English assessment. Next, this study aimed to find out the level of English Language teachers\u27 perception towards the implementation of school-based oral English assessment. Then, this study went on further to identify the relationship between the implementation of school-based oral English assessment with the influencing factors such as content, function and perception of the teachers. Finally, the study aimed to find out the most influencing factor on the implementation of school-based oral English assessment. A total of 56 English Language teachers (respondents in the study) from 14 rural secondary schools in three rural areas under Sandakan Division were sampled and administered with structured questionnaires. Independent Samples T-Test, One-Way ANOVA, Correlation Analysis (\u27r\u27) and Multiple Regression analysis were used for this study. It was found that there is no significant difference in the implementation based on demographic factorsthe teachers have a positive perception towards the implementation of school-based oral English assessmentthere is positive correlation between the implementation and the influencing factorsand, finally the function factor is the most influential factor
