BACKGROUND: Tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4) is an essential cofactor of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS). When BH4 levels are decreased, eNOS becomes uncoupled to produce superoxide anion (O2(-)) instead of NO, which contributes to endothelial dysfunction.
