Overview The aim of this chapter is to provide the reader with a broad overview of the field of social and emotional learning (SEL) and a rationale for this book. In doing so I touch upon some of the key issues that are addressed in more depth later in the text. The chapter concludes with a brief look at the structure and content of the book in order to give the reader a sense of what is to follow. Key Points SEL is a dominant orthodoxy in education systems across the world. It refers to the process of explicitly developing skills such as empathy and self-regulation in children and adults, typically in school settings.
