Improving Student Simple Past Tense Mastery through Song: A Classroom Action Research at the Eight Grade of SMP MuhammadiyahParakan, Pamulang

This research is conducted to know whether students? ability of past tense could be improved by using songs and to know how songs could improve the students? mastery on past tense. This research was conducted at the eighth grade A class of SMP MhammadiyahParakan,Pamulang which has 20 students. This research used Classroom Action Research (CAR) method in improving the students? mastery on past tense. The researcher used the Kemmis and Taggart?s model that consists of four phases; planning, acting, observing and reflecting. Then, in collecting and analyzing the data, the writer used observation, interview, pre-test and post-test. This research was conducted in two cycles and was done in fouractivities including the pre-test and the post-test. The result of this research showed that song was effective to improve students? ability in simple past tense. The students? responses showed that they were more enthusiastic to learn simple past tense material because they thought that the listening to the song was interesting and fun. Moreover, the students? achievement in pre-test and post-test was significantly improved. Initially, the students? average score in pre-test was 69. There were only 45% of the whole students who could pass the criteria of the minimum completeness (KKM). Afterwards, the students? average score in post-test was 76.75, there were 90% of the whole students? average score in who could pass the KKM. In other words, there were 18 students who could pass the KKM. From this result, it can be concluded that song can be used as an effective medium to improve the ability of simple past tense of the eighth grade students of SMP MuhammadiyahParakan ? Pamulang
