The objective of the study is to describe the cohesive devices, level of cohesiveness and relations of topic in the texts of an English textbook for Grade XI. The design used is qualitative, in which cohesive devices in each adjacency pair is described and analyzed thoroughly, and given a score for its level of cohesiveness based on parameter of Halliday and Hasan?s taxonomy on cohesion. Meanwhile, the topical subject of each sentence is identified and the topical progression of each paragraph is analyzed in order to determine the relations of topics in the texts in building coherence. The result indicates that all cohesive devices are used in the texts, with reference and substitution as the most and the least used device. It is found that...
