The relationship between students� writing habit, grammar mastery, and their writing skill in descriptive text : a correlational study at the tenth grade students of SMA Bakti Idhata Cilandak, South Jakarta

The objectives of this research were to know and describe the relationship among three variables, (1) the relationship between students� writing habit (X1) and their writing skill in descriptive text (Y), (2) the relationship between students� grammar mastery (X2) and their writing skill in descriptive text (Y), (3) the relationship between students� writing habit, grammar mastery, and their writing skill in descriptive text. This research was carried out to the tenth grade students of SMA Bakti Idhata Cilandak, South Jakarta. It used correlational method. The population was all the tenth grade students. And the sample was 85 students taken using simple random technique by referring to Isaac and Michael Table. The research instruments were writing habit questionnaire, grammar mastery test, and writing skill in descriptive text test. The data analysis used in this research was correlation regression analysis assisted by SPSS 20. The finding of this research showed: firstly, there was a significant relationship between students� writing habit and their writing skill in descriptive text. Secondly, there was a significant relationship between students� grammar mastery and their writing skill in descriptive text. Thirdly, there was a significant relationship between students� writing habit, grammar mastery, and their writing skill in descriptive text altogether. In conclusion, students� writing habit and grammar mastery variable both have significant relationship with their writing skill in descriptive text
