An error analysis on grammatical error in students' writing recount text

The objective of this study is to know the types and the causes of grammatical error made by the students in writing English recount text. Errors were identified and classified into categories based on Azar�s theory. Quantitative method was used for this study. Instrument of this study is the test consist of a question that should be answered by the students by making an english writing. The students were asked to make English writing with a certain topic in an essay form. Findings from this study show that all types of error are exist, and the students often done the error in verb tense. It is happened because of students� interlingual transfer, different structure between L1 and TL, and students� low motivation. Based on finding above, it can be conluded that the most common error committed by the participants is error in verb tense. And the causes are mother tongue interference, overgeneralization, and context learning
