The influence of contextual teaching and learning to students: understanding on past continuous tense (an experimental study at the second grade of SMK Yayasan Miftahul Jannah Tangerang)

This study is conducted to describe the objective condition of teaching past continuous tense through Contextual Teaching and Learning method. It includes the teaching preparations, the material used by English teacher and the ealuation made by the teacher. This research is aimed to find out the empirical evidence whether or not there is a significant influence of Contextual Teaching And Learning (CTL) method toward students? mastery of grammar. To accomplish this objective, the writer used Grammar Translation Method (GTM) to compare the difference between the class which is taught by CTL Method and Grammar Translation Method. The design of this research is experimental study. The number of population is 120 students of SMK YMJ Tangerang class XI those are distributed to three classes. The writer then takes samples two classes by using purposive sampling technique; they are students of XI- Pemasaran as the experiment class and XI Administrasi Perkantoran as the control class with 28 students each. The writer then gives pre-test, treatments, and post-test to both classes, and applies the t-test formula to the obtained data. After conducting the research, the writer got the data which showed that the to > ttable; in significance level 5 %. The to = 3.19 and ttable = 2.00.
