An Analysis on Students' Error in Using Adjective Clause: A Case Study at Second Year of SMA Nusantara Plus Ciputat-Tangerang

The objectives of the research were to know the types of errors and the causes of errors in the use of relative pronouns of adjective clause made by the Second Year Students of SMA Nusantara Plus. The problem was formulated into what types of errors in the use relative pronouns in adjective clause? and what causes the students made errors?. The method of this research was descriptive qualitative method and the instruments of this research were written test and interview. Next, after the writer collected the data, then analyzed them by using the formula: F/N X 100%. So, the writer described and interpreted the data about what the types and the causes of errors that made by the students in the use of relative pronouns. The findings of this research were about the students� error in the use of adjective clause by describing the frequency of error in the sequence based on the most to the least frequency of errors, there were: whom, whose, which and who. Meanwhile, most students made error in the relative pronoun whom with the highest percentage of error (33%). Furthermore, in the types of error, most students made error in misselection (64%), misordering (21%), addition (9%), and omission (6%). In addition, the students� error caused by ignorance of rule restriction (49%), false concept hypothesized (21%), over generalization (16%), incomplete application of rules (14%). It can be concluded that most of the Second Year Students of SMA Nusantara Plus got the wrong in the use of relative pronouns and the sentence pattern errors. Therefore, the students have not mastered yet in understanding of the use of relative pronouns in adjective clauses especially in the relative pronoun whom
