Metaphor translation in novel �The Lost Symbols� by: Dan Brown

In this research, the writer focuses the research on translation study that it is the translation of metaphor in the novel of Dan Brown: The Lost Symbol. The aim of the research is to know how English metaphors in this novel are translated into Indonesian language. It is through some methods and strategies until the translation of the messages of the novel which is written in SL can be conveyed well to the audiences in TL. The method of this research is qualitative by comparing two texts novel, in source language (English metaphors) and target language (Indonesian metaphors). After finding the metaphors in the novel, the writer analyses them and applies the suitable strategies. First, the writer classifies metaphors into types of metaphor. Second, the metaphors are analyzed using Peter Newmark�s theory. Third, to check the acceptability of the translating metaphor from English to Indonesian, the writer uses translation based on dictionaries, namely: Oxford Advanced Learner�s Dictionary, Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia , Kamus Pengayaan Bahasa Inggris Indonesia, and Kamus Idiom. The writer uses Kamus idiom to analyze metaphor, because metaphor is part of idiom. The result of this study shows that most of the metaphor translation that occurs in Novel The Lost Symbol is standard metaphor. There are four procedures of standard metaphor; reproducing the same image in target language, replacing the image in the source language with a standard target language image which does not equal with the target language culture, conversion of metaphor to sense, and deletion.
