Positive and negatif politeness strategies in winter's bone movie script

Brown and Levinson introduce five main politeness strategies: (1) Bald on Record, (2) Positive Politeness, (3) Negative Politeness, (4) Off Record, and (5) Don�t Do the FTA. In this research, the writer focuses only on the positive and negative politeness strategies. This research aims to find out positive and negative politeness strategies and the reasons of these strategies usage in the dialogues of Winter�s Bone movie script using Brown and Levinson�s politeness theory. The data are taken from Winter�s Bone movie script. The collected data are analyzed by using qualitative method and descriptive analysis technique. The writer collects and analyzes the dialogues or utterances which are spoken to find out positive and negative politeness strategies used in the movie script. From the research findings, the writer finds 13 expressions which consist of positive politeness as the most used strategies with eight expressions and negative politeness with five expressions. This case indicates that the speakers and hearers know each other well so it can create a good relationship in the communication between them. The speakers use positive politeness to show the solidarity to the addressee, whereas they express negative politeness to keep the social distance with the hearers by using indirect and formal utterances
