The Translation Shift in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle�s Short Story The Adventure of Greek Interpreter

The objective of this research is to identify kinds of translation shift and to discover reasons how those translation shift applied in Indonesian translation. Also, the purpose of this research is to figure out what are the factors that can cause or affect of translation shift. This research is conducted upon sentences containing translation shift found in the short story kinds of translation shifts, a short story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, The Adventure of Greek Interpreter and its Indonesian Translation, Sang Penerjemah Bahasa Yunani by Mery Riansyah. The methodology used in this research is qualitative descriptive method. This research is accomplished by the writer by collecting the data from English version and Indonesian version and then compared them to find out the patterns of shift used. As the conclusion, the translator tries to find the closest natural meaning in target language but not swerve to far from the original story. The patterns of translation shift found in the translation of The Adventure of Greek Interpreter to Sang Penerjemah Bahasa Yunani are shifts from intra system shift, level shift, structure shift, and class shift
