An Analysis of the Readability Level of the Reading Texts in the Effective English Textbook; A Case Study at the Eighth Grade Students of MTs. Al-Falah, Jakarta Selatan

This research was carried out to find the empirical evidence about the readability level of the reading texts in the English textbook entitled Effective English published by Global Publisher in 2007 for the eighth grade students of MTs. Al- Falah Jakarta Selatan academic year 2013/2014. The writer used the Descriptive Analysis method in which the writer describes and analyzes the readability level of the reading texts in this textbook through two techniques: the Cloze Procedure Test is used to find whether the reading texts are readable or not to the eighth grade students, while the Flesch Reading Ease Formula is used to find the readability level of the reading texts. The population of this research is 128 students. By using purposive sampling, the writer took the 32 students as the sample of this research. The result of the research based on the Cloze Procedure Test that all the five reading texts are in the Independent Level and gain the score over 53%. It means the students can read and understand the reading texts independently without the help of the teacher. The each sore is The Bogor Botanical Garden (79.55%), The Big Tree (95.72%), A Plant and Its Parts (94.14%), Visiting Bali (90.39%), and I Had a Wonderful Memory (92.75%). Furthermore, the five reading texts are also quite easy as the scores of the students� correct answer are above 60%. While, the result from the Flesch Reading Ease Formula showed that the four of five reading texts are Very Easy and the reading grade is 5th grade. They are The Big Tree (98.27), A Plant and Its Parts (92.55), Visiting Bali (96.07), and I Had a Wonderful Memory (99.10). For the reading text entitled The Bogor Botanical Garden (75.70) is Fairly Easy and the reading grade is 7th grade. Based on the result above, it can be concluded that the reading texts in the Effective English textbook are easy and readable for the eighth grade students of MTs. Al-Falah Jakarta Selatan
