Teaching descriptive writing by using pictures

Writing cannot be separated in teaching and learning English. Some problems often occur when students learn English, especially writing. They think writing is difficult thing. Hence, in this skripsi,the writer applies pictures to teach one of writing forms, descriptive writing. This research is aimed to seek out the empirical evidence of whether the use of pictures in teaching descriptive text affects the students� descriptive writing significantly or not. This research is categorized as quasi-experimental study. It is called quasiexperiment because it is intended to investigate the effectiveness of using pictures on students� descriptive writing. The population of this research is the seventh grade students of Junior High School IslamiyahSawangan. Then the samples are the students of VII-6 as the experimental class and the students of VII-1 as the controlled class.The writer implemented the treatment and gave post-test to obtain the data. The finding of the research isthe students� score average in learning descriptive text taught by using pictures is Mexperimental=67.2, meanwhile the students� score average in learning descriptive text taught without picture is Mcontrolled=59.7. Besides, t-observation (to=3.61) is higher than t-table (tt5% = 1.98 and tt1% = 2.63). It shows that teaching descriptive writing by using pictures has a significant effect towards students� score in learning descriptive text. Thus, using pictures can improve the seventh grade students� achievement of Junior High School IslamiyahSawangan in learning descriptive writing
