An analysis on the students? errors in using prepositions of place (on, in, at) (a case study at the first grade students of Madrasah Aliyah Pembangunan UIN Jakarta)

This research is aimed to know the common errors in using prepositions of place by the students of MA Pembangunan UIN Jakarta. Also this research is aimed to know what the causes of the students? errors in using prepositions of place. This research is categorized as Case Study. The researcher observed the sample of the first grade students of MA Pembangunan UIN Jakarta, class X.B. The sample consists of 30 students. In this research, the researcher gave a test consists of 30 items and each number of prepositions of place is put in random, beside that the writer gave questionnaire sheet to know why the students made the errors in using prepositions of place on, in, at. After collecting data, the researcher analyzed and find out the common errors and the sources of errors made by the students in using prepositions of place on, in, at. After conducting the research, the writer found several findings; from the177 total errors, there are found 52 (29,37%) errors in using preposition of place on, 45 (25,42 %) errors in using preposition of place in, and 80 (45,19%) errors in using preposition of place at. It can be concluded that the most errors made by students of MA Pembangunan UIN Jakarta in using prepositions of place at. The reasons why the students made errors in using prepositions of place can be seen from the result of questionare, according to theory the causes of errors Peter Hubbard, et.al., the dominan cause students made errors is mother tongue Interference 53 % students faced difficulties and made errors in using prepositions of place on, in, at
